Tube Lines Maintenance

Tube Lines was set up in 2003 to handle maintenance, renewal and upgrade of London Underground infrastructure. This included track, trains, signals, civil work and stations on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines.

About Tube Lines
The company is responsible for over 200 miles of track, 255 trains, 100 stations, and over 2,500 bridges, lifts and escalators spread across these three lines.

Tube Line’s requirement
Tube Lines launched a £4.5 billion investment programme in January 2003 to upgrade the track, signals, trains and stations.

The success of the upgrades was largely dependent upon the station communications systems, which provided essential passenger information, security monitoring and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) services. The company needed a technology partner that they could trust to take on communications upgrades and, at the same time, handle the maintenance of existing systems

Our solution
We offered an integrated, whole life communications and maintenance solution for Tube Lines. We did this through Enhance Communications, a joint venture with Amey.

Our information systems integration allows its station management software to monitor and control public address, security monitoring, passenger help points and visual information display subsystems. These are all interconnected by the station LAN infrastructure, which also allows the SCADA subsystem to monitor other station assets such as lifts and escalators.

In addition to the upgrade programme covering 74 stations and maintenance contract supporting all of Tube Lines’ 100 stations, we also now provide ongoing site commissioning. In addition, we conduct regular system performances reviews to ensure that communications systems are delivering optimum efficiencies.

Result
Now Tube Lines benefits from a specially developed maintenance system, which is used to provide round-the-clock maintenance support services every day of the year.  We have consistently delivered in excess of 30 per cent beyond the service point targets, and are focussed on reducing fault levels and fix times on an ongoing basis.

On the Jubilee Line alone, telent has managed to consistently improve performance year-on-year and has driven fault levels down to 50 per cent of the permitted contract levels.

Like our customer, telent is constantly seeking to innovate to improve operational performance.  Tube Lines directly benefits from our:

  • considerable investment in training
  • constant monitoring of key performance indicators
  • development of systems to support the workforce, and
  • targeted planned maintenance to eliminate poor performing assets
