telent awarded Arriva Trains Wales station upgrade contract

Following a competitive tender from Network Rail, telent, the technology services company, has been awarded a contract to upgrade the Station Information and Surveillance Systems (SISS) across 59 stations and two control centres in the Arriva Trains Wales franchise. The project covers stations mainly in the South of the franchise, including Cardiff Central Station, and extends across to Hereford.

telent will initially undertake a survey and design phase at the 59 stations before installing approximately 150 CCTV security cameras, 46 Public Help Points (PHPs), recording equipment, new speakers and 100 new customer information screens.  The company is also renewing the Customer Information Systems (CIS) at the stations to improve the system availability and reliability as well as station security.  Following completion of the programme in 2010, passengers will benefit from the new screens providing a clearer view of information, especially in bright sunlight. Steve Pears, General Manager Rail at telent, said: “This is a comprehensive upgrade of the information and security systems at the stations.  The new equipment will improve the system availability and reliability and ensure that passengers have access to much clearer information in stations that are more secure.” Earlier this year, telent was awarded a similar contract from Network Rail covering the 177 stations and two operational centres at Wimbledon and Waterloo within the South West Trains franchise.  The programme, due for completion 2010, covers the modernisation of control software, servers and PC’s as well as information screens.  Network Rail and South West Trains’ passengers will enjoy the benefits of the programme such as improved system reliability and clearer traveller information.
