telent takes lead in innovative roadside technology

29 January 2008 – telent, a leading provider of technology services, today announced that it has been awarded a grant by the government-funded Technology Strategy Board for the development of 3 rd Generation Road Side Equipment (3GRSE) for use in road charging systems.

The grant will enable telent to manage the consortium, which includes EFKON UK, TSEU, TRL and CitySync, to develop a revolutionary data collection process to support a fairer charging environment for motorists.

Once developed, the new system will facilitate TDP (Time, Distance, Place) technology which will allow accurate, variable charging to take account of the location of motorists driving in rural areas or major cities. The system will utilise existing infrastructure to allow TDP to form an integral part of existing Local Authority Urban Traffic Management and Control systems. The technology will also provide organisations with a solution that offers a package of measures designed to manage congestion and improve accessibility, safety and the environment.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for telent, said Peter Eccleson, Director & General Manager for Highways at telent. “With over 30 years’ experience within the transport industry, we are proud to be leading a consortium of companies who each bring a wealth of expertise and knowledge to the table. Together we can focus on developing a leading edge technology and look forward to a successful future together.”

Steve George, an Independent Consultant added, “The consortium is an excellent source whereby leading industry companies can work together to provide pioneering technological advancements within the transport industry. The expertise within the consortium will ensure the delivery of a ground breaking traffic management tool.”
